5 ways to stay connected when you’re on the road

Post Date - Dec 10, 2021

Driving a truck is worthwhile, but we also know that there are sacrifices you make for this career you love. Being away from friends and family is probably the biggest one. It’s so important to stay connected with your loved ones - not only is it good for your relationships, but it’s necessary for your mental health too. Here are five of our favorite ways to stay connected when you’re on the road!

1. Scheduled calls

Cell phones make it easier than ever before to connect with others, but even with this great technology at our fingertips, it can still be hard to get someone on the line when you call. Giving your family a ring when you get a break is great, but also consider scheduling something regularly. If you both have a set time of day to be available to talk on the phone, the more likely you are to feel like you’re staying connected. For example, if you have little ones, you can incorporate these phone calls into their bedtime routine.

2. Gifts

Everyone loves a surprise gift. We’re not just talking birthday gifts, although those are nice too. It’s more about the ones that are just because, to let someone know that you’re thinking of them. From ordering something on Amazon or sending a gift basket or flowers, a small gift can go a long way to make someone feel really special.

3. Video

When you can’t be there in person, a video chat is the next best thing. FaceTime allows you to see your loved one while you talk. Other platforms like Google Hangouts and Skype allow you to video chat with multiple people at once, even if you’re all spread out in different locations. You can also take video footage of the places you’re traveling to and send them to your friends and family. It will make them feel like they’re right there with you, experiencing the same beautiful places.

4. Play games together

Thanks to apps and online games, it’s so easy to play a game with your family from wherever you are. There are so many options, from Monopoly to word games, interactive games where you build your own farms, and so many more. This is also a great activity for your downtime while you’re away because it’s something enjoyable to do.

5. Social media

Say what you want about social media, but you can’t deny that one of the best things about it is its ability to connect us with others. You can scroll your newsfeed and connect instantly with others by liking and commenting on their photos and videos. Interacting on social media can make us feel a little less like we’re missing out.

Staying connected while you’re on the road is important, but don’t forget that having a good balance of home time should also be a priority. Taking home time regularly allows you to relax, recharge and strengthen those relationships face-to-face. That’s why we recommend choosing a carrier that has a home time option that works for you. At NTB, our regional drivers get frequent, guaranteed home time. If you’d like to learn more about our home time and driving opportunities, give us a call today!
